Our main review this month is Uterotonics for preventing postpartum haemorrhage. Bleeding after birth is the most common reason why mothers die in childbirth worldwide. To reduce excessive bleeding at childbirth, the routine administration of a drug to contract the uterus (uterotonic) has become standard practice across the world. There remains some uncertainty as to which drug is most effective. The team of Cochrane researchers have summarized evidence from 140 studies involving nearly 90,000 women in a network meta-analysis, a formal statistical technique that combines data from studies directly and indirectly. The review found that compared with oxytocin, which is the current standard drug, ergometrine plus oxytocin, misoprostol plus oxytocin, and carbetocin were more effective at reducing excessive bleeding at childbirth.
